The visitors could have been ahead after just two minutes when a goalmouth scramble was only cleared as far as Lewis Hogg, his half-volley from the edge of the area skimming the bar on its way over. But aside from the early opportunity, it was largely Rugby's half as both sides resorted to long ball strategies. So it came as a surprise and out of nowhere when Danny Hall's through ball split the Bath defence in half and released David Stone to cooly finish past City keeper Paul Evans. Town's Jason Taylor could also have doubled the hosts' advantage six minutes later but failed to meet Aaron Stringfellow's header across goal. Matt Gearing also caused the visitors a number of problems down the wing and went close to getting on the scoresheet himself with a lashing shot from 25 yards which just went over the bar. An unusually quiet first half from City in fact saw them register only two efforts of real merit, Holland going close on the half hour and Scott Partridge having his effort tipped over the bar with five minutes of the half to go.

But it was City's game after the restart when Mark McKeever, whose set-pieces proved the turning point of the game, sent in a free-kick from the right for Holland to head home on 53 minutes. They were still resorting to the kick-and-chase game, though, as Rugby's defensive remained fairly solid. But on 79 minutes another McKeever free-kick found its target, with Steve Jones heading home across goal with no marker in sight, and he also had a hand in City's third a minute later when his low cross from the left connected with Partridge, who fired past Farhad Afandiyev from close range. McKeever then rounded off a fine second-half performance on 82 minutes, twisting and turning Stringfellow on the left and firing a shot which came off the boot of the Rugby midfielder and found its way to the net at the near post. Rugby had an opportunity to reduce the deficit two minutes from time when Stone was brought down in the area by Gethin Jones, but his resulting spot-kick was well saved by Evans at his far right corner.
