For once City took control of the game from the start with some excellent build-up play containing Wealdstone in their own half. More familiar was the sight of City not making the most of that possession. Scott Partridge turned very well on the edge of the box before firing a low hard drive across goal which Carroll did well to get down to, but Wealdstone weathered the storm for the opening 20 minutes and slowly got back into it. City were still playing the better football with makeshift midfielder Steve Jones revelling in his new holding role. The visitors were making the better chances though. Dean Papali and Graeme Montgomery had both forced Paul Evans into saves when the former latched on to a through ball in the box before chipping the on-rushing keeper only to see the ball sail over the bar. There were only minutes of the half to go when referee Tim Lawrence found himself at the centre of the game's biggest talking point. Wealdstone defender Stuart Bamford completely missed a clearing header from a long ball over the top from Lewis Hogg to leave Scott Partridge clean through on goal. With his first touch the City striker knocked it past keeper Carroll, but was then taken clean out by the shotstopper right on the edge of the box. A red card seemed inevitable, but when the man in black flashed yellow an incensed Twerton Park crowd erupted. Wealdstone were still breathing a sigh of relief when, in first half injury time, Chris Holland glanced a Mark McKeever free-kick into the bottom corner.

The visitors pushed forward from the start of the second half and were level within ten minutes, Papali flicking home at the near post from a corner. It was fast-paced, free-flowing football after that with City making the most in-roads. After a great build up move started by Arek Zarczynski, Partridge turned in the box, sold his man, waited for the keeper to commit himself and then unselfishly rolled the ball across goal to the unmarked Rogers. Rogers may have struck a blinding 25-yard screamer in midweek, but, with an open goal begging eight yards out, he skied his effort well over the bar. It could have proved very costly but his blushes were spared with 17 minutes to go. Another good move down the right following a set-piece saw Matt Coupe blast the ball across the face of goal from the byline. Right on the goalline, Partridge hardly had time to move when it struck him at the right angle and ended up in the back of the net. It was City's first piece of good fortune in another wise luckless encounter and they held on after a nervy final few minutes.
