But assistant manager Adie Britton insisted City will have to step up another two gears to win this weekend's British Gas Business Southern League opener at Corby Town. City were rarely troubled by the visitors, but only a 42nd-minute Terry Green own goal separated the sides at half-time. After the break, tweaks to City's formation saw them click into gear to grab goals through Scott Partridge, Lewis Hogg, Matt Coupe and Craig Davidge. "We were very poor in the first half, producing nothing much in the way of penetration from an overwhelming share of the possession," said Britton. "That's a concern because far too often we hit the ball long to the front men and they're just not big enough for us to play that way. "Mark McKeever hit half-a-dozen crosses into the box in the first 45 minutes but that was probably the only plus point." At half-time, Hogg, who started as one of three strikers, was pulled into a more withdrawn role and City began to open Cwmbran up. Partridge hit the target in the 68th minute to make it 2-0 and Hogg capitalised on good work from new signing Nat Pepperell and Partridge to take City 3-0 clear. Coupe climbed above the Cwmbran defence to head in number four from a Hogg free-kick and Davidge had the final word for City when he made it 5-0 late on. "The tactical change worked and the second half was much more fluent and the chances started to come as our link-up play improved," said Britton. "We took four of them to end up with what, on paper, looks like a comfortable win, but the performance was always more important than the result. "On that score, we've probably come away with more questions than answers in some respects. "There may have been an element of nobody wanting to risk an injury in a game which wasn't one for shrinking violets, despite it being a friendly. "Cwmbran worked us hard and some of the lads may have had one eye on next week's game at Corby. "We're ready for that game now. We picked up no knocks and we've got good competition for starting places over the next week. "We're down to the serious business on Saturday and the lads have always known they'll need to lift their performance level."
