With new signing Russell Milton and trialist Graeme Power both unavailable it was a familiar City line-up that began the game, although another triailst Adam Howarth once again featured alongside Mike Trought in the centre of the defence. Up front manager Alan Pridham continued to shuffle his centre-forward pairing, Jason Eaton and Mark Salter given the starting places this time. Both came close to giving City the lead after 23 minutes when the latter brought a fine stop out of Rendell before the former stabbed the rebound weakly at the keeper. Further chances came and went for City but the home side grabbed the lead on 35 minutes. Catley fired a low corner into the near post and via a combination of Brown, a City defender and Mark Bryant the ball found it’s way into the net. A run by Frankie Bennett that left three defenders trailing in his wake almost saw City draw level before the break but his cross was scrambled clear. The second period continued with City enjoying the majority of possession but as at Gloucester on Saturday looking worrying lightweight in front of goal, Eaton, Salter and Andy Williams all wasting good chances. At the other end City had two amazing escapes as Rovers no.10 somehow managed to head wide of an open goal from no more then a yard out and then blast over an equally unguarded net after Bryant had parried a long range effort. Just after the hour mark a rare moment of class almost drew City level. Substitute Dan Cleverley’s dipping 30-yard volley flew over Rendell only to hit the foot of the post. However, City only had to wait a couple more minutes before an equaliser did arrive. Again Cleverley was involved, his run into the Paulton box forcing a defender to handle. Fellow substitute Steve Tweddle made no mistake from the penalty spot to open his pre-season account. City huffed and puffed in search of a winning goal but it never came, in fact a couple of times they were almost caught on the break by the hard-working lower league side.
