City bounced back from the defeat against Newport Isle of Wight, ending their four game losing run in the process, with a much
improved performace against Folkestone Invicta that probably deserved more than the one point it gained. There were two
changes to the side that folded against Newport, new signing Rob Cook coming in for top scorer Adrian Foster and fit-again
Jamie Gosling relegating Bradley Thomas to the bench. The changes meant Paul Milsom was handed a sole front-running role with
City stringing five men across the middle of the park.
A heavy and prolonged downpour as the game began made an already heavy pitch even worse but both sides bravely attempted to
play football on the saturated surface. The early openings fell to City as a low shot by Gosling tested keeper Wietecha after
13 minutes and Milsom glanced a header wide four minutes later. However, this bright start again counted for nothing as City
fell behind in the 23 minute. The home side earned a corner after Johnston had blocked McRoberts effort. The ball was swung
in toward Morris and his faint touch was helped over the line by Thorne. Despite some half-hearted appeals that the ball had
not crossed the line the referee awarded a goal. In contrast to recent games City didn't let their heads drop and began to
gain the upper hand, dominating possession and slowly applying pressure to the Vics uncertain looking defence. When
a deserved equaliser arrived it began with this sort of pressure. Wietecha was forced into a hurried clearance that only
found Gosling. He advanced toward goal before laying the ball off to Milsom. The big striker took one touch before
unleashing a stunning shot that curled beyond the floundering keeper and into the top corner of the goal.
The interval saw Bradley Thomas replace Lee Collier and he produced one of his best performances in a City shirt, regularly
stretching the Folkestone defence with his strong and direct running. At the other end lady luck almost saw City fall behind
again when a fortunate rebound fell to Dryden in the area. He laid the ball off to Dent but to the relief of City's vocal
supporters his shot was blocked on the goalline by Kemp. Gosling had a good penalty appeal turned down after he was
bundled over on 62 minutes and then with 20 minutes remaining he was replaced by Foster and
suddenly City looked capable of turning their considerable possession into a vital second goal. Drysdale and Harvey both
fired shots into the side netting before a misplaced back pass saw Foster force an excellent save from Wietecha after 76
minutes. Milsom was also denied by the keeper after a neat pass by Williams had given him a shooting chance. The resultant
corner ended with the referee awarding City an indirect free-kick just seven yards out after Wietecha had picked up a clear
back pass. With the whole of the Folkestone side on the goalline Drysdale's first effort was blocked and after Harvey's follow
up shot also failed to breach the wall the danger was cleared. Dent and Daniels almost made City pay for these misses but in
injury-time City nearly grabbed a last-gasp winner. Foster ran onto a long through ball and nicked it past the out rushing
Wietecha only for the keeper to clearly bring him down right on the edge of the box. However, the referee incredibly saw
nothing wrong with the challenge and waved play on. When he brought the proceedings to an end moments later there was a brief
flare-up between the players that ended with Drysdale receiving a long lecture but (it appeared) no caution or worse, and
City were left to reflect on a performace that they will need to repeat again and again if they are to retain the Premier
Division place.
