The early exchanges belied the visitors lowly position and they could have grabbed an early lead when Haran got on the end of a Craven cross but his header crashed against Hervin's bar. After riding their luck with this escape City promptly went and scored with their first meaningful attack. 14 minutes had passed when Milsom challenged for a long ball forward and deflected it into the path of Williams, who fired past Gayle for his first City goal. This goal against the run of play did little to dent Hednesford's confidence and they continued to control the game. Lancashire sliced a chance well wide on 24 minutes following a neat header by Davis and two minutes later the striker saw a shot blocked well by Thorne. Clearly beginning to get fustrated at their inability to turn possession into goals the Pitman handed City a second goal four minutes before the interval. Having previously dealt comfortably with what little threat City produced their defence suddenly went AWOL, leaving Foster and Williams with acres of space. The latter could have shot himself but choose to square the ball to City's top scorer and he made no mistake from six yards out. If City had gone into the break with this lead intact the final outcome may have been different but into stoppage time Davis began his goal burst. Aidrie's free-kick was not properly cleared and the Town number ten fired a unstoppable volley past Hervin.

Before the half had ended Williams almost restored City's two-goal lead, his low shot bouncing narrowly wide of the post, but within 19 seconds of the restart Hednesford were level. Bagshaw and Brownrigg combined to give Davis a shooting chance that he fired past Hervin from 25 yards out. Clearly stunned by this blow City handed the away side the lead just eleven minutes later. Powell gave the ball away in the centre of the park allowing Bagshaw to run clear before crossing for Davis to complete his hat-trick from close range. Almost immediately City made two changes, Thomas replacing Zabek and the disappointing Poole making way for Wyatt. And it was the letter change that paid dividends as the former Worcester man set up an equaliser with his first touch. His great pass through to Foster sent the striker clear on goal and he lifted a stunning 20-yard chip over Gayle. Hednesford now made a change of their own, introducing 6'8 striker Francis into the action but he made little impact and it seemed that if either side was to nick a winner it would be City. First, Harvey forced a smart save out of Gayle from a long range effort and then sub Thomas was denied by the keeper who pushed his curling free-kick to safety. However, with both appearing to have settled for a draw one final Hednesford attack saw Davis control a pass in the City box before turning a beating Hervin at his near post with a low shot.
